Summer Safety Starts at Home: Keeping Kids Safe While They’re Home Alone
While summer in Vermont brings sunshine and freedom, it also brings unique challenges for families where kids spend more time at home.
☀️ Why Summer Safety Matters
With school out of session, children are home more often—sometimes without adult supervision. This increase in unscheduled free time can lead to more exposure to online dangers, neighborhood risks, or unintentional isolation during crisis.
🔐 NSCVT’s Summer Safety Resources
-
Community Education Workshops: We’re offering free, local sessions on internet safety, boundary-setting, and stranger awareness for families and youth. Email education@nscvt.org to register.
-
24/7 Crisis Hotline Support: Our emergency line is staffed around the clock: 802‑775‑3232. If you or your family needs help in a crisis or to safely plan ahead, we’re here.
-
Summer Survivor Circles: Peer support groups for anyone experiencing abuse, loss, or trauma—confidential and welcoming.
📚 Prevention Tips for Parents & Guardians
-
Discuss healthy boundaries, respect, and technology use with kids.
-
Set up a check-in schedule —ask kids to text you at mealtimes or every few hours when you're out.
-
Share Your Safe Circle with children: trusted adults they can call (relatives, trusted neighbors).
-
Keep emergency numbers and the NSCVT hotline number printed and posted on your fridge.
