Job Title: Direct Service Advocate
Reports to: Program Director
Status: Full-time, Non-Exempt
Position Overview:
The Direct Service Advocate plays a vital role in delivering comprehensive support to survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking. As a generalist, this position supports all facets of NewStory Center’s direct service programming, including shelter advocacy, supportive case management, client intake and assessment, 24/7 hotline coverage, and general client support. The advocate works as part of a collaborative team, using a trauma-informed and empowerment-based approach to help clients achieve safety, stability, and independence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide emotional support, crisis intervention, and resource referrals via hotline and in-person services
- Support clients in emergency shelter, including safety planning, basic needs assistance, and daily living support
- Conduct client intakes, assess immediate and long-term needs, and help develop service plans
- Assist with case management including goal setting, systems advocacy, and support navigating housing, legal, health, and financial services
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with confidentiality and grant requirements
- Participate in staff meetings, case consultations, and ongoing training to strengthen service delivery
- Share rotating coverage of hotline and shelter duties, including occasional evening or weekend shifts as assigned
- Uphold agency policies, mission, and values in all aspects of work
Qualifications:
- Experience in human services, advocacy, or related fields preferred; relevant lived experience also valued
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a commitment to survivor-centered practice
- Ability to remain calm in crisis situations and respond with compassion and clarity
- Reliable, flexible, and able to work independently and as part of a team
- Comfort with technology and record-keeping; prior experience with data entry or case management systems a plus
- Must pass background checks and complete required training upon hire
Work Environment:
This position is based on-site at the NewStory Center office and shelter. It requires occasional evening or weekend hours for hotline and shelter support.
