Expanded Helpline Services: A Lifeline for Abuse Victims in Vermont
A new legislative milestone in Vermont is making waves in the community of support services for abuse victims. As of this September, Act 12 has expanded accessibility for obtaining protective orders at any hour of the day. This critical development ensures that victims of sexual assault and domestic violence can now seek emergency protective measures even outside of traditional court hours, offering a lifeline when it is needed most.
What Does This Mean for Victims?
The expansion of after-hours helpline services signifies a huge step forward. Previously, protective orders could only be requested by victims of domestic abuse outside regular court hours. With Act 12 in effect, victims of sexual assault also have this crucial access. Victims can call the emergency line at 1-800-540-9990
anytime the courts are closed. A trained worker will assist them in processing the required forms and, if the situation meets certain criteria, a judge will issue a protective order immediately.
The Importance of 24/7 Availability
Domestic and sexual abuse situations don't adhere to a 9-to-5 schedule, and neither should access to protection. By allowing victims to apply for protective orders around the clock, Vermont's new law recognises the unpredictable nature of abuse dynamics and provides a timely and potentially lifesaving resource.
